School Summary
Columbia is home to students representing 26 countries and includes services in programs such as English as a second language (ESOL), noncategorical special education (NCE), noncategorical preschool, and school-based gifted and talented. We focus on helping each student to realize his or her special talents and interests with the goal of providing stimulating learning experiences within a secure and caring environment. Our staff members participate in ongoing professional development and employ the latest educational research and learning theories in the classrooms. Areas of emphasis include differentiated instruction, the integration of technology into all areas of the curriculum, and adaptations of the curriculum to meet the needs of nontraditional learners. We emphasize development of higher-level thinking skills and guide students to think creatively and critically through problem-solving activities.

We help to foster respect for all members of the community, provide students skills for working cooperatively, and aid them in understanding the richness that cultural diversity brings. Columbia has a strong corps of volunteers to enhance the educational opportunities that will afford each student the chance to prosper now and in the future. The students and staff members benefit significantly from the continuing support of an active and committed PTA.
