School Summary
Mountain View Alternative High School provides students with a challenging learning environment that is safe, secure and accepting. The school community values the individuality of its members, and strives to provide an educational setting that encourages creativity, critical thinking and leadership. Clearly stated goals, aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and the Fairfax County Public Schools’ Program of Studies, establish the framework for academic achievement. Faculty and staff monitor student progress in a variety of ways to meet individual needs and ensure academic and personal success. Mountain View Alternative High School recognizes learning as a lifelong process that begins with a solid academic foundation and continues with the development of essential career and transition skills to prepare students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Mountain View Alternative High School provides a learning environment designed to meet the needs of a diverse student population. Mountain View teachers work with students in small classes and focus on individual strengths and needs. In following the Fairfax County Public Schools’ Program of Studies and the Virginia Standards of Learning, teachers use a variety of instructional strategies to foster academic success. Mountain View focuses on school-to-work plans and prepares students for post-secondary opportunities including college, employment, specialty schools, and the military.

Mountain View Alternative High School offers programs designed to help students whose life circumstances often result in interrupted schooling. This adult/alternative high school population consists of students who may be pregnant or parenting, English Language Learners, older students who are returning to finish their high school graduation requirements and students who need a flexible or extended program to accommodate their work or family situations. Students develop a high degree of motivation and self-discipline as well as the social, personal, and academic skills to reach their goals. In addition, Mountain View accepts students who are based at another school and wish to accelerate their educational program or who have been administratively placed. Students with severe discipline problems are not a target population for this school.

This adult/alternative high school program includes a range of standard course offerings and elective courses needed for graduation. Student schedules are flexible as courses are offered from 8:00 a.m.to 6:30 p.m. during the school week. Mountain View’s adult-oriented setting enables students to come and go in conjunction with their other responsibilities. Ultimately, students become independent and responsible for their own learning.

Mountain View Alternative High School is accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a special purpose high school in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
