School Summary
The caring and dedicated faculty of White Oaks Elementary School provides outstanding educational opportunities. The high academic expectations of teachers are implemented with individualized student support to attain the school's motto of Ensuring Excellence for Every Child.
Continuous progress instructional models are implemented in the skill areas of mathematics and reading. Students' successes in these two subjects are assessed on a regular basis. Teachers use the results of the assessments to determine students' instructional needs. In turn, students are grouped and re-grouped regularly for individualized and small-group reading and mathematics lessons. The model provides students with instruction at levels appropriate to their needs and ensures the rewards of academic progress for every child.
The school's overall instructional program is extended, enhanced, and enriched through strong use of technology. Over two hundred computers in labs and all classrooms are used in conjunction with digital cameras, presentations systems, flex-cams, and telecommunications to engage students with learning and empower them to create products of exceptional quality. The school's server allows students to save and retrieve their work at any location within the building.
Musical, visual, and performing arts are integral component of the core curriculum for all students. Fifth and sixth grade students select from a number of elective courses designed to help students realize special talents. The faculty also focuses on the development of the whole child with an emphasis on social growth through regular class meetings and peer mediation training sessions. The ability of students to resist detrimental behaviors is strengthened by frequent recognition and celebration of students' assets.
Under the leadership of the strongly organized and enthusiastic school PTA, highly interested and dedicated parents contribute significantly to the successes of White Oaks students. The parents provide thousands of hours of volunteer services that range from one-on-one instruction to participation on the school's planning committee. The school is connected to the wider community through the business-school partnerships of the Lake Braddock Pyramid.
