School Summary
Hunters Woods Elementary is a magnet school for the arts and sciences. All students benefit from our enriched program. The goal is to promote a collaborative family of learners, with a focus on innovations in teaching and learning.
Flexible environments allow students to use traditional educational sources along with resources beyond the walls of the classroom. The school is on the forefront of reform through the implementation of innovative programs including model technology, Success by Eight, Reading Recovery, multiage classes in the primary grades, looping in the upper grades, and inclusion and combined services delivery model for our special education students.
Staff members weave fine arts, performing arts, science, and technology into a curriculum that extends and enriches the education of its diverse student body. Teachers pursue a variety of staff development opportunities, during the school year and the summer months, on such topics as integration of the arts with the content areas, problem solving for at-risk students, and integration of technology throughout the curriculum.
Staff members also serve as clinical faculty for the George Mason University professional development school as they train future teachers. The arts team includes music, art, drama, and dance. The teachers develop projects and curriculum that integrate conceptual units culminating in schoolwide performances and museums-in-progress. The George Mason University Institute for the Arts provides support and theater space for programs such as the original musical sponsored by the New York Metropolitan Opera Guild.
An expanded music program includes fourth grade band and third grade strings. The science discovery program provides students with the enriched opportunities to participate in environmental education, a 4-Winds weather station, and the National Geographic Jason Project. Staff members and the PTA collaborate to maintain high academic standards and provide an enriched school experience for all Hunters Woods students.
