School Summary

Langston Hughes Middle School, named for a great African American poet and orator, is dedicated to student achievement and accountabilty as a first priority. Education is centered around differentiated teaching strategies and techniques to benefit all student populations.

The overriding theme driving curriculum and instruction is, How will this affect students? Needs assessments are priorities, followed by planning and implementing lessons designed to increase skill development and actuate intellectual curiosity. Special education services are available for students with disabilities consistent with the recommendations of individualized education program teams. In addition to special education services, other services include, but are not limited to, center- and school-based gifted and talented classes, English for speakers of other languages, and a foreign language curriculum.

Recognizing multifaceted needs of emerging adolescents, cocurricular events continue to encourage academic promise through Odyssey of the Mind and other core subject area clubs. Interdisciplinary teaching and teaming encourage remediation, and reteaching opportunities are provided during Saturday Academy. Finally, through an environment flooded with technology, a strong curriculum, and a deep desire to touch, capture, and sustain learning potential, Langston Hughes is preparing students to be stable citizens and successful scholars.
