School Summary
Herndon Elementary School, established in 1961, is the only elementary school in Fairfax County located within the town of Herndon. It is very proud of its reputation as a school that cares deeply about every child and keeps children as the main focus in every endeavor. The diverse population provides for a learning environment rich in unique individuals who bring many varied experiences to the classroom.

The regular education program is further complemented by an optional French language partial-immersion program, which provides language instruction simultaneously with instruction in mathematics, science, and health. There is a constant focus on student potential that is exemplified by the school motto: “Be All You Can Bee!” Lessons are designed to meet students' individual learning styles and specific academic needs.

Through positive behavior, the school mascot, the Herndon Busy Bee, reminds students to Bee Fair, Bee Caring, Bee Trustworthy, Bee Responsible, and Bee Respectful. This positive incentive program reinforces the pillars of character education as well as the four Cs of cooperation, common sense, courtesy, and consideration. Everyone strives to make Herndon Elementary School the best it can be.

In working to provide the very best instructional program, staff members, parents, and community members support a variety of programs designed to promote the academic and social growth of the students. Together staff members strive to improve the academic achievement and the personal growth of underachieving, minority, ESOL, and special education students while at the same time challenging those who are ready to stretch their current knowledge and skills. Intervention and support programs include Reading Recovery, EXCEL Saturday school, KID Lab, Young Scholars’, after-school remediation, tutoring, and before-school enrichment programs.
