School Summary
Woodlawn Elementary School traces its history back to about 1846 when school met in a large room in the Woodlawn mansion. Over the years, Woodlawn’s boundaries have changed and its population has become highly diverse, but its sense of community has remained the same.

The Woodlawn faculty and staff members form a professional learning community (PLC) committed to empowering individuals to become responsible citizens in a changing world. Teachers believe that all children have the potential to succeed academically and that the development of a positive self-concept is critical to their success. Staff members work together to meet the unique needs of every student.

Woodlawn’s academic program emphasizes achievement of the Virginia Standards of Learning and the Fairfax County Program of Studies objectives within an inclusive setting. Teachers incorporate creative problem solving and decision-making skills, oral and written communication skills, and technology into the English, mathematics, science, and social studies curriculum areas.

The Woodlawn staff encourages the support and involvement of families and community partners. All work together to create a safe and caring environment that fosters mutual respect and responsibility. A strong Parent Teacher Association (PTA) provides exciting experiences for students through fieldtrips, assemblies, family events, and volunteerism. Parent coffees and evening workshops give opportunities for communicating and sharing information. Please become involved!
