School Summary
Fort Belvoir School is a new elementary school that opened its doors in September 1998. Located on the Fort Belvoir Army Installation, this new school replaced the three existing elementary schools (Cheney, Markham, and Barden) that closed in June 1998. Fort Belvoir School is one of the largest elementary schools in FCPS and the Washington Metropolitan area serving nearly 1200 students in kindergarten through grade six. Within this 136,000 square foot facility, there are 57 classrooms and numerous resource activity spaces for curriculum specialist and the fine arts.

The media center includes three instructional reading areas; a large children’s library collection; a TV studio; and on-line catalog, circulation, and multi-media stations.

Designated as a Model Tech School, the facility is fully networked for Internet access and equipped with the latest technologies. There are three stationary computer labs, three mobile wireless computer labs and several computers in each classroom. All classrooms are equipped with TVs, VCRs, and laserdisc players to support instructional media. Staff members participate in ongoing training in computer applications and operations.

A special needs staffing throughout the school supports the academic needs of all students. A Reading Recovery team of two teachers offers an early intervention reading program for “at risk” first grade students. Using the inclusion model, a team of school-based and cluster specialists coordinates special education services for students with learning, emotional, physical, and speech related disabilities. Two preschool special education classes and one autism class are available for students with specific developmental disorders. Gifted and talented, band, strings, and choral programs are also offered to students.

An active PTA builds bridges between home and school by supporting extra-curricular activities in a variety of ways including the Book Fair, home-room parents program, parent volunteers, school store, Spirit Wear and field trips. Dedicated volunteers support all aspects of school-based operations.
