School Summary
Rolling Valley Elementary School is home to the Rockin' Robins. Parents, staff, and community work together to provide a positive, supportive, and caring atmosphere where students feel comfortable and come to school ready to learn. Intellectual curiosity and creativity are encouraged in order to develop the individual potential of every student. Students thrive in the culturally diverse population with general education, special education, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs. Instruction is provided through a continuum of services integrated appropriately for the individual needs of general education students; students with varying degrees of learning challenges; as well as students identified as gifted and talented.

Ensuring excellence for every child requires high academic expectations from a community of learners. Solid instruction is provided through teacher use of researched, best practices and strategies that support student-centered learning. Ongoing student assessment and continuing staff development provide a winning combination that keeps student success at the forefront. In addition to classroom instruction, students welcome opportunities to participate in activities such as the Challenge 24 and the Continental Math competitions, band, chorus, strings, Patrols, the Cupstacking Club, SCA Spirit Days, First Grade Book Bag Night, West Springfield activities, after-school tutoring, and the mentoring program. Regular parent communication through conferences, newsletters, Keep in Touch and the FCPS 24-7 Blackboard site keep parents informed as partners in their child’s education.

Technological prowess is key for active citizenship in the twenty-first century. The state-of-the-art computer lab is designed as student-friendly preparation for the society they are entering. In addition, several portable computer labs of sixteen laptops are available to supplement classroom computer stations and are used extensively in the science lab and ESOL classrooms. The media center is equipped with computer stations, a closed-circuit broadcasting studio, and computerized checkout. SMARTboards, which are used to enhance teacher instruction and engage interactive student participation, are also available. Wireless access to the World Wide Web exists throughout the school building.

An active PTA supports student achievement and the education of the whole child by sponsoring after-school programs such as Reflections, FLEX, and Mad Science, in addition to cultural and educational assembly programs presented throughout the year. Business partners, working with the school counselor, provide mentors for students. Academic tutors from neighboring high schools support students after school. Volunteers from the school community are visible in classrooms and workrooms throughout the school day and into the evening hours. The cooperative effort among the involved parent neighborhood, the school-business partnerships, the extended community, and the school nurtures the love of learning for all students at Rolling Valley.
