Mantua Elementary’s mission is to help students make connections across disciplines, integrate and apply literacy skills in language, mathematics and the arts; and become effective problem solvers and independent learners. The school and community have a shared vision for elementary education based on Ernest Boyer’s Basic School philosophy. Mantua focuses on proven elementary best practices; the school as a community, a curriculum with coherence, a climate for learning, and a commitment to character.
Mantua’s teachers work in professional learning teams to assess their students’ needs and strive to bring innovative, standards based instruction at each grade level. Teachers design integrated curriculum using Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Program of Studies and the Basic School’s eight commonalities while incorporating brain-based learning strategies within their lessons. Grade level teams engage students in collaborative project-based learning activities that develop and apply students’ problem solving abilities. Specialists incorporate content based grade level curriculum within their discipline while developing students’ appreciation for languages, healthy living habits or the arts.
At Mantua, staff members have a commitment to the thoughtful integration of technology and technology is seen as a tool that empowers the acquisition of knowledge and simplifies, facilitates and enhances that learning process. The closed circuit TV studio, two-way interactive distance learning and video production facility enhances Mantua’s strong emphasis on incorporating the arts with other subject areas, provides visual accessibility for all learners, and presents unique opportunities to support interdisciplinary learning.
