School Summary
Little Run Elementary School was established in 1963 and maintains its fine reputation as a caring, warm, and well-respected school. The school’s academic mission is to develop within our students the ability to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, and to accept and appreciate diversity. Little Run staff is committed to guiding students in developing academic and decision making skills about how to live their lives as caring, responsible and ethical citizens.

Students are heterogeneously grouped for instruction in classrooms in kindergarten through grade six. Students are regularly challenged to go beyond the required curriculum through projects and enrichment activities. Flexible grouping for math and language arts instruction provides for differentiated instruction to meet the learning needs of students with varied learning styles and abilities. Teachers and administrators collaborate to support the development and implementation of teaching strategies that provide for high expectations of student achievement. Quarterly plans and quarterly interim reports provide parents with ongoing information about instructional goals and student progress.

School programs include special education preschool, English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), gifted and talented (GT), and non-categorical school-based and learning disabilities services with inclusion and self-contained settings, as needed. Little Run also has a Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES) program. Students in first-third grade are developing basic communicative skills in Spanish while reinforcing and enriching content in other disciplines. The FLES model provides students in and elementary school with language learning opportunities. Research studies have indicated that the early study of a second language results in cognitive benefits, gains in academic achievement, and increased self-esteem, creativity, and positive attitudes toward diversity.

Parents are active participants in the daily school life of Little Run students. Volunteers are frequently seen in the building reading with students, working on solving math problems or supporting many curriculum focus days, such as Colonial Day in sixth grade. PTA supports after school foreign language (FLEX), chess club, and Girls on the Run, as well as GRACE Arts and an extensive array of field trips. School staff members, supported by an enthusiastic and supportive PTA, are dedicated to the belief that we are . . . Working Together for Excellence.
