School Summary
Camelot Center is a centralized special education site that utilizes the Auditory Oral communication modality to provide instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The Center provides service to deaf and hard of hearing students from preschool through 6th grade with full day kindergarten. It is the belief of Camelot Center that through early intervention and instruction students can develop age appropriate skills in listening, academics and fluent oral expression.
Camelot Center is co-located with Camelot Elementary School and works closely with the elementary school administration and staff to provide inclusive opportunities for center students. Camelot Center’s reduced ratio classes are located in close proximity to Camelot Elementary School peer classrooms offering many opportunities for peer interaction. Center staff members are included on grade level teams and are a part of the Professional Learning Community at the school sharing instructional planning and school activities.
Camelot Center’s mission is to develop academic and communication skills through an appropriate, stimulating and challenging academic program that takes into account individual differences. The goal is to empower deaf and hard of hearing students to increase their independence and self-advocacy skills to gain more opportunities for future education and employment, and to enable them to participate as fully as possible in their schools and communities.
Auditory Oral methodology emphasizes the use of auditory skills to develop oral language, communication, literacy and academic skills. Audiologists and staff work closely with families and local hearing aid providers and cochlear implant centers to insure that students have appropriate amplification. Sound field amplification systems are located in every classroom in the center and elementary school.
Based on the student’s Individualized Education Program, instruction is tailored to meet the specific needs of each student while following the Fairfax County Public Schools Program of Studies. Intensive auditory habilitation and speech training are key features of the service.
A strong Home School Partnership exists between families and staff and stresses mutually shared expectations, goals and objectives for students with the ultimate goal of developing each student’s potential to the fullest to achieve academic excellence leading to independent and fulfilled lives. The Camelot Hearing Association (CHA) made up of families and friends of Camelot Center provides support and education to families and to the center.
Although Camelot Center is in Cluster II and the Falls Church Pyramid, students who are deaf or hard of hearing and need an intensive level of service can attend from throughout Fairfax County.
