Kilmer Middle School provides a model of excellence for middle school students transitioning between the self-contained elementary school model and the comprehensive high school model. Its vision is to provide a safe environment that dares each individual to embrace new challenges in a resourceful and collaborative learning community.
Kilmer’s school plan emphasizes academic success, organization, study skills, and a professional learning community. Kilmer is staffed with dedicated, caring educators who plan and share current instructional strategies designed to fulfill the school's mission. Kilmer Middle provides special education services for students with disabilities consistent with the recommendations of individualized education programs. In addition to special education services, other services include, but are not limited to, instructional programs for gifted and talented students, English for speakers of other languages, and inclusive experiences for all students.
Using the middle school philosophy, Kilmer has implemented educational teams at each grade level. Each team consists of approximately 140 students with multiple teachers, a counselor, and an administrator assigned to each team. To meet the numerous demands of a diverse student population, special education and general education teachers work collaboratively with teams. Teaming allows staff members to create a learning community and provides opportunities for increased communication with parents and students.
As part of the professional learning communities’ philosophy, each core department also has a common planning period during the instructional day to discuss lesson plans, assessments, and assessment data and to identify and develop common instructional goals. The Kilmer staff’s focus is to create a nurturing and safe environment that results in optimal student learning.
The commitment of the PTA and the community is vital to the successful implementation of the instructional programs. Parental involvement is essential to maintaining a healthy educational climate.
