Longfellow Middle School has developed a reputation of academic excellence, with nationally recognized accomplishments in the fields of mathematics and instrumental music.
Longfellow Middle School has embraced the middle school concept in areas that best suit the needs of the community. The school operates on a traditional daily schedule. All students are part of an academic team (teachers of English, social studies, and science, and a counselor). All teachers are expected to incorporate the development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills into the curriculum for all students, regardless of academic program or progress. Emphasis is placed on making each academic area (regular education, the gifted center, the honors program, special education, and English For Speakers Of Other Languages) the best it can be. In that way, all students are supported in ways that help them reach their full individual potentials.
A positive school climate is enhanced by a variety of programs that involve the greater community. This school’s PTA contributes to the benefit of all school citizens through financial support and advisement to the principal. The McLean Safe Community Coalition works with the school to support various programs, including an anti-bullying initiative. The school’s business partner, Booz Allen Hamilton, provides resources to the school and participates in a student mentoring program. The school has a wide-ranging after-school activities program including a recreation program in affiliation with the McLean Old Firehouse Teen Center.
