Volunteer Learning Program Receives Community Service Partner Award

The Volunteer Learning Program (VLP), the tutoring arm of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Adult and Community Education, was recently honored as a Community Service Partner by the Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) Board of Trustees.

The Board recognized VLP for its outstanding service, noting that the program has partnered with FCPL for over 30 years to provide essential tutorial assistance to adults in the community. In its announcement, the Trustees noted that over decades, “Many hundreds of Fairfax County residents have been able to explore new educational and career opportunities due to the efforts of VLP.” Lorraine Walker and Margret Elliott accepted the award on the program’s behalf.

VLP volunteers meet by appointment with learners in library branches throughout the county to help these individuals prepare for the GED, study for a high school diploma, or improve reading, writing, or math skills. Two hundred-fifty volunteers provided almost 11,000 hours of service to over 150 adults in 19 libraries and other locations last year.
