Nineteen Fairfax County High Schools Win VHSL Journalism Awards

Students from 19 Fairfax County public schools won awards for journalistic excellence from the Virginia High School League (VHSL) for publications produced during the 2007-08 school year.

In the magazine competition, winners included:

• Trophy Class: Andromeda, Chantilly High School, Bretton Zinger, advisor.
• First place:  The Filament, Annandale High School, Kathleen Dion, advisor; Scribe, Herndon High School, Constance Casserly, advisor; Tartan, McLean High School, Joel Kane, advisor; Opus, Oakton High School, Susan Sullivan, advisor; Xanthus, South County Secondary School, Troy Ketch, advisor; Calliope, Westfield High School, Greg Luongo, advisor; and Page, Woodson High School, Ron Shapiro and Drew Marvin, advisors.
• Second place:  Erudite, Edison High School, Alison Douglass, advisor; Wingspan, Hayfield Secondary School, Mary Prunchak, advisor; Troubadour, Lee High School, Maria Gilbert, advisor; and Carousel, Robinson Secondary School, Tim Harris, advisor.

In the newsmagazine competition, winners included:

• First place:  H2N, Hayfield Secondary School, Marge Craig, advisor.

In the newspaper competition, winners included:

• Drawing: third place, Christina Paladeau of Chantilly High School.
•  Prose Spread: honorable mention, Matt Sparacino, Chantilly High School.

In the writing-photography-design journalism contest, Group AAA Yearbook, the winner was:
