Statement on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors' Action on the Gatehouse Administrative Consolidation Proposal

We are very disappointed in the action taken this afternoon by the Board of Supervisors, which declined to approve financing of the bond that would allow the school system to consolidate 14 administrative offices into an existing property adjacent to its current Gatehouse administrative center. We believe our board and staff made a compelling case for purchasing the property and indeed, this proposal was verified by an independent third-party expert as a sound business decision.

Our community, including the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Civic Associations, supported the School Board’s decision to move forward with the purchase.  They agreed it was the right business move at the right time.

We hope that the dialogue can continue with the Board of Supervisors to arrive at a solution that will address the school system’s pressing facility needs.

With today’s action by the Board of Supervisors, the school system now faces two major challenges: the first is where to locate staff who need to move out of the Lacey and Devonshire facilities which are scheduled to be renovated into vibrant elementary schools for their communities, and second, how to consolidate the other administrative facilities to save taxpayers money.
