FCPS Adult and Community Education Program Honored

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Adult and Community Education (ACE) Volunteer Learning program (VLP) received Fairfax County's 2008 volunteer service award for Outstanding Volunteer Program, presented at Volunteer Fairfax’s annual awards breakfast on April 24. ACE director Bonita Moore, adult high school completion program coordinator Jane Cruz, and VLP staff members Lori Baker, Trisha Carr, Jan Buckner Throckmorton, and Britt Caridi were on hand to accept the award on behalf of the program’s volunteer tutors.

The VLP, established in 1975, recruits and trains volunteers to tutor adults in the academic skills necessary to obtain a high school diploma or GED and to improve essential reading, writing, and math skills. Through a strong working relationship with Fairfax County public libraries, VLP tutors meet with individual learners in public libraries on days and at times convenient to both tutor and adult learner; tutors also help in adult GED preparation classes, Woodson Adult High School classes, and National External Diploma program study groups. In addition, through its longstanding partnership with the Fairfax County Juvenile Courts, VLP tutors help court-involved juveniles to finish high school at the Juvenile Detention Center and at other interagency and alternative school settings.

The Volunteer Fairfax awards serve as communitywide recognition for volunteerism and honor individuals, groups, and organizations that have given outstanding volunteer service through a broad range of activities and programs.
