Eighteen Fairfax County Public Schools Win Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence

Eighteen Fairfax County public schools are among 89 schools statewide that were recognized with the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence created by the Virginia Board of Education. 

The FCPS schools that met the criteria for the award include:

  • Carson Middle.
  • Chesterbrook Elementary.
  • Churchill Road Elementary.
  • Colvin Run Elementary.
  • Cooper Middle.
  • Franklin Middle.
  • Great Falls Elementary.
  • Haycock Elementary.
  • Hunt Valley Elementary.
  • Longfellow Middle.
  • Louise Archer Elementary.
  • Madison High.
  • Oak Hill Elementary.
  • Oakton High.
  • Thoreau Middle.
  • West Springfield Elementary.
  • Westfield High.
  • Woodson High.

Qualifications for the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence include meeting all state and federal achievement benchmarks for no less than two consecutive years and meeting Governor Tim Kaine’s goals for achievement in elementary reading; enrolling students in Algebra 1 by eighth grade; enrolling high school students in college-level courses; offering advanced diplomas and career and industry certifications to be earned by high school students; and participating in the Virginia Preschool Initiative, if eligible.  Schools and school divisions also earned points for performance measures such as the Governor’s Nutrition and Physical Activity scorecard.

The following Fairfax County public schools received the VIP Excellence Award: Aldrin Elementary, Belvedere Elementary, Bonnie Brae Elementary, Canterbury Woods Elementary, Centreville High, Chantilly High, Cherry Run Elementary, Clifton Elementary, Columbia Elementary, Crossfield Elementary, Fairfax High, Fairfax Villa Elementary, Fairhill Elementary, Fairview Elementary, Flint Hill Elementary, Floris Elementary, Forestville Elementary, Fox Mill Elementary, Franklin Sherman Elementary, Graham Road Elementary, Greenbriar West Elementary, Herndon High, Irving Middle, Island Creek Elementary, Keene Mill Elementary, Kent Gardens Elementary, Key Center, Langley High, Laurel Ridge Elementary, Mantua Elementary, Marshall High, Marshall Road Elementary, McLean High, Mosby Woods Elementary, Navy Elementary, Oak View Elementary, Olde Creek Elementary, Ravensworth Elementary, Robinson Secondary, Rolling Valley Elementary, Sangster Elementary, Spring Hill Elementary, Stenwood Elementary, Sunrise Valley Elementary, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Union Mill Elementary, Vienna Elementary, Virginia Run Elementary, Wakefield Forest Elementary, Waples Mill Elementary, Waynewood Elementary, West Springfield High, Westbriar Elementary, White Oaks Elementary, Willow Springs Elementary, and Wolftrap Elementary.  The VIP Excellence Award is given to schools that have met all state and federal accountability benchmarks for no less than two consecutive years and have made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunity as set by the governor and the state Board of Education.

The following Fairfax County public schools received the VIP Competence to Excellence Award:  Armstrong Elementary, Clermont Elementary, Cub Run Elementary, Cunningham Park Elementary, Deer Park Elementary, Edison High, Falls Church High, Hayfield Elementary, Kilmer Center, Lane Elementary, Lee High, Lees Corner Elementary, Newington Forest Elementary, Oakton Elementary, Orange Hunt Elementary, Pine Spring Elementary, Silverbrook Elementary, South Lakes High, Stuart High, Terra Centre Elementary, Timber Lane Elementary, Westgate Elementary, and Woodley Hills Elementary.  The VIP Competence to Excellence Award recognizes schools that have met all state and federal accountability benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and have made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunity as set by the governor and the state Board of Education.
