FCPS Middle School Students Win Top Honors at Regional MATHCOUNTS Competition
Students from three Fairfax County Public Schools—Rocky Run Middle School, Twain Middle School, and Longfellow Middle School—won first place awards at the Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS competition, held Saturday, February 2.
The team from Rocky Run Middle School won first place in the Fairfax Chapter competition, outscoring 26 competing schools. Team members are Joshua Lee, William Li, Sydney Zheng, and Daniel Lee; coach is Melanie Roller. The Carson Middle School team of Lillian Wang, Ju Yeon Lee, Lawrence Wang, and David Liu finished in third place in that division. Angie Cahill coaches the Carson team.
In the George Washington Chapter competition, the team of Caulton Wilson, Zachary Hayden, Peter Zhao, and Arnav Gupta of Twain Middle School won first place in a field of eight teams; Rachel Moneypenny coaches the Twain team. Finishing second was the team of Timothy Arndt, John Wilkie, Sarah Trans, and Michael Brockway of South County Middle School, coached by Gina Evans. Sandburg Middle School’s team finished third; team members are Emma Cuddy, Christopher Letai, Robby Scherer, and Olivia Scheidt and the coach is Bob Scherer.
Longfellow Middle School won the Northern Virginia Chapter competition, besting 18 other schools. Team members are Franklyn Wang, Scott Becker, Alex Sun, and William Sun, coached by Mary Jo Clark.
FCPS students who earned the top individual scores at their chapter events were Hanhsen Zhao of Twain Middle School, George Washington Chapter, and Franklyn Wang of Longfellow Middle School, Northern Virginia Chapter. Other top scoring individual competitors were (Fairfax Chapter) Joshua Lee of Rocky Run Middle (third place); (George Washington Chapter) Timothy Arndt of South County Middle (third place); and (Northern Virginia Chapter) Longfellow Middle students Scott Becker (second place), Haoyuan Sun (third place), and Alex Sun (fourth place).
The winning team and top two individuals who are not on the winning team from each chapter will compete at the Virginia State MATHCOUNTS competition to be held on March 16 in Glen Allen.
Over 450 sixth through eighth grade students from 52 elementary and middle schools competed at the events. These students have been practicing since the fall and were selected to represent their respective schools at the competitions. Students compete as school teams and as individuals.
As a national math enrichment, coaching, and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students, MATHCOUNTS helps prepare students for advanced studies which are necessary for so many future career opportunities and success. This year, over 5,000 students will be competing during February throughout the United States and territories.
The Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS program is sponsored by the Northrup Grumman Information Systems, Comcast, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, and various individual contributors. Leadership of the local MATHCOUNTS program is provided by members of the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers in collaboration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
