tjToday Named 2012 NSPA Newspaper Pacemaker Finalist

tjToday, the student newspaper of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), has been named a 2012 National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Newspaper Pacemaker finalist in the category of Broadsheet Newspapers 9-16 pages. TJHSST is a Fairfax County public school.

tjToday is edited by Rabia Idress; Jennifer Seavey serves as the adviser.

Four Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) student publications earned an honorable mention in the NSPA competition. In the Design of the Year contest, honorable mentions went to:

  • Saxon Scope, Langley High School, in the Newspaper Page One category; Cathy Kiess, news editor, and Na He Jeon, art director; Jennifer McAdams, adviser.
  • The Clan, McLean High School, in the Yearbook Page-Spread category; Hannah Heile and Melanie Ta, design editors; Meghan Percival, adviser.

In the Cartooning Award contest, honorable mentions went to: 

  • The Highlander, McLean High School, in the Editorial Cartoon category, Jessica Tang, cartoonist; Lindsay Benedict, adviser.
  • Opus, Oakton High School, in the Comic Panel-Strip category; Marina Fondin, graphic designer-cartoonist; Susan Sullivan, adviser.

Winners of the Pacemaker awards will be announced at the Journalism Education Association (JEA)-NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention in November in San Antonio.
