Fairfax County School Board Elects Moon as Chairman

The Fairfax County School Board has elected Ilryong Moon (at-large) as chairman and Pat Hynes (Hunter Mill District) as vice chairman for a one-year term. The chair and vice chair assumed office at the July 12 School Board meeting; they are elected by School Board members during the Board’s annual organizational meeting.
“I want to thank Janie Strauss for her excellent leadership this past year as School Board chairman,” said Moon.  “As our Board moves forward to face the challenges ahead, I am committed to supporting a strong collaborative approach, which will ultimately benefit the students and families of Fairfax County.”
Moon served on the School Board from 1995-1999 and from January 2004 to the present. He was elected chairman in 2006 and served as vice chairman in 2005 and 2011. A partner with the law firm of Moon, Park, and Associates, he is a former member of the Fairfax County Planning Commission, the Governor’s Urban Policy Task Force, and the Virginia Advisory Committee of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. Moon earned his juris doctor degree from the William and Mary Law School and his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University.
Hynes, who was elected to the School Board in November 2011, worked as an elementary school teacher in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) from 2002-11. She formerly served on the Superintendent’s Business and Community Advisory Committee and was a founding member of the Vienna Teen Center Foundation. Hynes also served as PTA president at Louise Archer Elementary School and as president of the Malcolm-Windover Heights Civic Association and F.B. Meekins Cooperative Preschool. Previously, she worked as an associate at Simpson, Thacher, and Bartlett in New York City. Hynes earned her juris doctor degree from Vanderbilt University and her bachelor’s in economics from the University of Virginia.
