Fairfax Academy Students to Present Evening of Original Music December 9

MCTfest, an evening of innovative, original music performed by student composers in a relaxed coffeehouse setting, will be presented by students in Fairfax Academy’s Music and Computer Technology (MCT) program on Friday, December 9, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Ernst Community Cultural Center on the Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Fairfax Academy is one of six high school academies in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

Performances will include a brass quintet, solo pianists, singer-songwriters, and rock bands performing contemporary, classical, jazz funk, blues, and rock music. Some of the acts were formed this fall, with students from different FCPS high schools rehearsing for weeks specifically for this annual event, a fundraiser for the MCT program. Tickets are $15 in advance or at the door.

MCTfest is organized, managed, and performed entirely by students from the class. Second year MCT students co-manage and oversee every detail, with planning that begins in August. In addition to performing, students also participate collaboratively in every aspect of MCTfest including audio tech, stage management, publicity, box office, concessions, and event logistics.   Fairfax Academy students from TV Production and Photography Studio classes film and photograph the event.

Fairfax Academy’s MCT program provides pre-professional instruction in music composition using industry standard software and equipment in a MIDI lab environment. Students also learn about the many career opportunities for composers, particularly in the film and video game industries. Many alumni are working professionally in the music industry.
