Fairfax County School Board to Refund Fees for AP, IB Tests

The Fairfax County School Board has voted to refund approximately $2 million in fees collected from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) families for Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) tests. The action is being taken in response to a January 28 opinion by Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli “that a local school board cannot impose a mandatory fee on students taking advanced placement courses for the required taking of the Advanced Placement Examination.”

A $75 per test fee was adopted by the School Board for the FY 2011 budget in an effort to increase revenues in the face of a third consecutive year of requiring budget cuts.

Since exam fees will be paid by FCPS, students currently enrolled in an AP or IB course are still required to take the AP or IB exam related to that course.

Refund notifications will be mailed in early April to parents and guardians who have already made payments and all refunds are scheduled to be processed by the end of April.
