FCPS Solicits Public Comment on Proposed Social Studies Textbooks

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is soliciting community feedback on proposed new textbooks and online materials for social studies courses in kindergarten through grade 12 beginning Tuesday, October 13, until Monday, November 23. The books will be available at the FCPS Education Library located in the Sprague Technology Center at 4414 Holborn Ave, Annandale (directions to the Sprague Center may be found at http://commweb.fcps.edu/directory/map_base.cfm?locid=5005 ). The library is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each business day and will provide extended hours until 9 p.m. on the following dates: October 14, October 20, October 28, November 3, November 11, and November 17.

Textbook review committees composed of community members, administrators, and teachers met in July to review social studies textbooks for kindergarten through grade 12. Public review of the recommended materials is part of the process for selecting new textbooks.

Citizens are encouraged to review the proposed textbooks and online materials and complete comment sheets that will be forwarded to the School Board before the textbook adoption vote at the December 17 business meeting. The new textbooks will be available for purchase by the school system beginning in July, 2010.
