FCPS Recognized as Laureate and Finalist by Computerworld Honors Program

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has been recognized as a Laureate by the IDG (International Data Group) Computerworld Honors program for the Flight School project. Honorees were recognized during the 21st annual Laureates Medal Ceremony and Gala Awards on June 1 in Washington, D.C. Maribeth Luftglass, FCPS chief information officer, accepted the award.

Nominated by Booz Allen Hamilton in the category of Education and Academia, Flight School was selected as one of only five finalists in the category. Produced by the Fairfax Network, Flight School is a four-part electronic field trip and web experience that focuses on the history of aviation. The purpose of the project is not only to provide educational content to students, but also to provide a real world connection with science and math. Student viewers can see how the technological advancements in aviation began with questions and problems and the review of data—processes that are not very different from the processes they use in class today. The individuals who made history in aviation walked in footsteps similar to those of today’s students, and that recognition helps to both encourage and inspire students to pursue interests in math and science.

Flight School was funded by the Northern Virginia chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA NOVA) and was produced in conjunction with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

Founded by IDG in 1988, the Computerworld Honors program is governed by the not-for-profit Computerworld Information Technology Awards Foundation and is the longest running global program honoring individuals and organizations whose visionary application of information technology promotes positive social and economic progress. Additional information about the program can be found at the Computerworld Honors web site: www.cwhonors.org.
