FCPS Wins Five Telly Awards
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has captured five Telly Awards for 2009. The Telly Awards, similar to the Emmy Awards, recognize exceptional cable programming and are among the most sought-after awards in the television, commercial, and video industry. Top entries are chosen based on the number of points scored on a ten-point scale and are judged against a standard of excellence. This brings the total number of Telly Awards won by FCPS since 2001 to 57.
FCPS productions receiving 2009 Telly Awards are:
- Flight School: From Above, bronze award winner in the Educational Program category. This show was created in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum’s Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center and funded by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association of Northern Virginia. Part of a four-part series on aviation, the program explores what we learn about our planet by being able to travel above it.
- Shaping the Presidency, bronze award winner in the Educational Program category. This show is part of the Mount Vernon series and was funded by George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens. Featuring journalist and author Cokie Roberts as moderator, this program explores how George Washington’s election and presidency compares to the election of a modern president.
- Insight #5, bronze award winner in the Informational Program category. This episode of Insight, which originally aired in November 2008, included the following stories: Gifts for Wounded Soldiers at Madison High School; Best Buddies at Marshall High School; Taking Drama to the Core at Burke School; an introduction to Kim Dockery, new assistant superintendent of the Department of Special Services; and an interview with FCPS Superintendent Jack D. Dale.
- SchoolScene #7, bronze award in the News or News Feature category. This show, which originally aired in December 2008, featured the following stories: Thanksgiving Day Lunch at Lorton Station Elementary School; Career Camp at West Potomac Academy; the Red, White, and Blue Breakfast at Washington Mill Elementary School; SCA at Woodley Hills Elementary School; Jacqueline Jules at Timber Lane Elementary School; The Laramie Project—Cappies Review at South County Secondary School; and Brain-Based Learning at Mantua Elementary School.
- Flight School: Blast Off, bronze award for Use of Special Effects. This show was created in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum’s Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center and funded by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association of Northern Virginia. Part of a four-part series on aviation, the program explores how the development of rocketry led to the space program.
Most of the funding for FCPS programming and production, as well as use of cable television channels, comes from a franchise agreement with cable providers. Many of the winning programs will be rebroadcast over the summer; watch the Fine Tuning program guide (http://www.fcps.edu/mediapub/cable-tv/ ) for dates and times.
Founded in 1980, the Telly Awards competition originally showcased and recognized outstanding nonnetwork and cable commercials. The highly respected awards program then expanded to include film and video productions. Winners and finalists are from a cross section of agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operations, and corporate video departments, including the FedEx Corporation, PBS, Discovery Health Channel, Universal Studios Network, and Walt Disney Studios. Producers of the winning spots will receive statuettes and certificates.
