Thursday, May 21, 2009 Edison Academy Cosmetology Program Recognized by Governor Kaine The cosmetology program at Edison Academy is one of three recipients of the first Virginia Governor’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Exemplary Standards Award, which recognizes outstanding career and technical education programs. Cosmetology instructor Soussan Bayati will receive the award from Virginia Governor Tim Kaine in August. Edison Academy is one of six high school academies in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). Students in the Edison Academy cosmetology program have posted a 100 percent pass rate on their Virginia state board examination in cosmetology for the past three years. The program teaches the students safety, sanitation procedures, professional ethics, salon business management, and hair care chemistry. Students who successfully complete the two-year program and pass their state board examination are eligible to work as professionally licensed cosmetologists in Virginia. Programs nominated for the CTE Exemplary Standards Award submitted documentation on how the programs meet required state standards. The programs with the highest ratings received site visits, which included classroom observations and interviews with students, teachers, administrators, graduates, and employers. As an award winner, Edison Academy’s cosmetology program will be part of a growing network of exemplary programs to share best practices. Edison Academy will receive a banner to display in the school and a $5,000 cash award for continued program improvement. The award was established through Virginia’s National Governors’ Association grant.### For more information, contact Edison Academy administrator Brad Rickel at 703-924-8100 or brad.rickel@fcps.edu.
