Three FCPS Schools Named Title I Distinguished Schools

Three Fairfax County public schools—Belvedere Elementary, Pine Spring Elementary, and Sleepy Hollow Elementary—have been named Title I Distinguished Schools by the Virginia Board of Education. The awards recognize schools that have raised academic achievement for economically disadvantaged students and are based on state assessments during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 school years.

The three schools are among 124 statewide recognized for maintaining full state accreditation under Virginia’s Standards of Learning (SOL) program for two consecutive years, meeting benchmarks of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) in reading and math, and posting average test scores in reading and math at the 60th percentile or higher.

Title I of NCLB provides funding to school divisions and schools for programs to raise the achievement of students identified as being at risk of academic failure. The federal law requires schools and school divisions to meet annual objectives for increasing student achievement on statewide assessments in reading and/or language arts and math.
