Five FCPS Students Win First Place Awards at Virginia History Day Competition
Five Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students won first place awards and eight students won second place awards at the Virginia History Day Competition held last weekend in Williamsburg. Winning first place awards are:
- Meagan Cantwell of Whitman Middle School for Patenting the Sun: The Enduring Actions and Legacy of Jonas Salk, Junior Individual Exhibit.
- Sarah Locke and Syeda Fatima of Mount Vernon High School for Thurgood Marshall: Engineer of Equality, Senior Group Exhibit.
- Emily McDougall of West Springfield High School for Wernher von Braun, Senior Historical Paper.
- Rita Zevallos of West Springfield High School for Edmund Burke, Senior Web Site.
Second place finishers include:
- Katelyn Sparks of Lorton Station Elementary School for Clara Barton: One Woman Helping Millions, Junior Individual Documentary.
- Moira Lennon, Kristina Scollins, and Jordyn Stuger of West Springfield High School for John Wesley, Senior Group Documentary.
- Ryan Wood of Mount Vernon High School for Woody Guthrie: Poet of the People, Senior Individual Exhibit.
- Veronica Bryant and Nora Mady of Mount Vernon High School for Sequoia, Senior Group Exhibit.
- Emily Wolfteich of Edison High School for All a Poet Can Do Is Warn: Wilfred Owen’s Lasting Witness to War, Senior Individual Performance.
West Springfield High School social studies teacher Cathleen Boivin was named Virginia History Day Teacher of the Year for 2009. The theme of the 2009 contest is the Individual in History: Actions and Legacies. Students in grades 6-12 were encouraged to examine their topic's influence on history and draw conclusions about the ways in which their topic had an impact on the course of events and on individuals, communities, nations, or the world. The National History Day competition is scheduled for June 14-18 at the University of Maryland.
