Murphy to Leave Fairfax County Public Schools

Patrick Murphy, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) assistant superintendent for accountability, has announced that he will accept the position of superintendent of Arlington Public Schools.

“Pat has taken FCPS’ accountability program to a new level after successfully leading the schools in Cluster VI,” says FCPS Superintendent Jack D. Dale.  “We will miss his intellect and vision. We look forward to having him as our neighbor at Arlington Public Schools.”

Since August 2005, Murphy has been responsible for supervising the offices of educational planning, program evaluation, and student testing, including administering the Virginia state assessment program and FCPS testing program, and analyzing and reporting student test results.

He began his career with FCPS in 1988 as a health and physical education teacher at Key Middle School and served in administrative positions at Mount Vernon High School, Sandburg Middle School, Hayfield Secondary School, and Irving Middle School.  Murphy moved to Winchester Public Schools in 2002 where he served as director of instruction until returning to FCPS in December 2004 to serve as Cluster VI assistant superintendent.
