West Potomac Academy Students Create Ball Gown Designs for Michelle Obama

Two Fairfax County Public Schools students have each designed a possible inaugural gown for Michelle Obama, wife of President-Elect Barack Obama, as part of a contest sponsored by Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce (GWFCC). These contest winners are Phenita Gomes, a senior at Bryant High School, and Dominique Oostdyk, a junior at West Potomac High School. Both students are Fashion Design Level One students at West Potomac Academy.

For the contest, students were asked to create a bold and flattering inaugural gown for the soon-to-be first lady. Contestants also researched the inaugural gowns of former first ladies and discussed why stylists choose particular gowns and the work involved in creating the perfect look.

West Potomac Academy Fashion Design students explore the creative process and develop technical and presentation skills related to fashion design. Such skills help students understand the fashion industry and career opportunities offered in fashion design.

GWFCC is a professional organization that West Potomac Academy Fashion Design students belong to. The organization offers real world opportunities to students throughout the school year.

The two design contest winners will receive gift cards and have their winning fashion illustrations published on luxstyledc.com sponsored by GWFCC.
