Falls Church High AVID Program One of Five Nationwide Selected as Schoolwide Superstars

The Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) program at Falls Church High School is one of five programs across the nation and the only one in Virginia selected to be a Schoolwide Superstar by AVID. The Falls Church High AVID team will present highlights of the program that made the school one of the top five in the country in preparing students for college readiness and success at the AVID-College Board National Conference in San Antonio in March. Falls Church High is a Fairfax County public school.

Falls Church High, which is also an AVID national demonstration school, established its AVID program in 1999 with a series of goals that include helping students in the middle academically achieve their potentials; succeed in a rigorous curriculum, including Advanced Placement (AP) courses; close the achievement gap; and enroll in a four-year college. The AVID elective offers higher-level thinking skills, strategies for school success, test preparation, college and career exploration, oral language and speaking skills, and research skills. Students are also offered tutorials in collaborative study, higher-level questioning, problem solving, and project planning and are also exposed to guest speakers, field experiences, thinking games, and motivational activities. As a result of the AVID program, students enroll in AP courses in high numbers, pass Standards of Learning (SOL) tests in high numbers, and score higher on the SATs than other students in Virginia and across the nation.
